If you have lost one tooth or several, there are three ways to replace them: a dental implant, a dental bridge or a denture. Each one suits a different situation. As a prosthodontist, replacing missing teeth is the core of my work, and this guide sets out how the three compare so you can walk into a consultation knowing your options.
Why replace a missing tooth at all?
A gap does more than change how you look. The teeth either side slowly tip into the space, the tooth above or below it can drift out of its socket, and your bite changes. The jawbone where the tooth used to be also starts to shrink, because it no longer gets the pressure of chewing. The longer a gap is left, the more likely it is that replacing it later will need extra work, such as a bone graft before an implant.
What is a dental implant, and how long does it take?
A dental implant is a titanium post placed in the jawbone, which acts as a new root, with a crown fitted on top. It stands on its own, so the neighbouring teeth are not touched, and it is the only option that keeps stimulating the jawbone.
- Time: usually 4–6 months from placement to final crown, most of which is the bone healing around the implant.
- Cost at White Oak: from ₹25,000 per tooth for the implant and abutment, with first-year reviews included. The crown is priced separately, and bone grafting adds to the cost.
- Lasts: the implant can last a lifetime with good care; the crown may need replacing after 15–20 years.
- Best for: anyone with enough jawbone (or bone that can be rebuilt) who wants a permanent, independent tooth.
For people missing most or all of their teeth, All-on-4 or All-on-6 implants hold a full fixed arch of teeth on four or six implants. Read more about dental implants in Ranchi.
What is a dental bridge, and when is it the better choice?
A bridge fills a gap with a false tooth held in place by crowns on the teeth either side. It is fixed, so it does not come out, and it is finished in two visits.
- Time: 2 visits.
- Cost: depends on the number of units and the zirconia chosen; a bridge for one missing tooth is usually three units. Check your bridge cost in our estimator.
- Lasts: typically 10–15 years or more.
- Best for: one to three missing teeth in a row, especially when the neighbouring teeth already need crowns.
The trade-off is that the neighbouring teeth have to be shaped for crowns, and a bridge does not stop the bone under the gap from shrinking. See dental bridges and crowns.
When are dentures the right choice?
A denture is a removable set of teeth. A complete denture replaces a whole arch; a partial denture fills gaps around your remaining natural teeth, with a cast-metal frame or a flexible, clasp-free base. An implant-supported denture clips onto two to four implants so it stays firmly in place.
- Time: usually 4–5 visits over 3–4 weeks, including a trial fitting.
- Cost: the most affordable way to replace several teeth at once. Your quote depends on the type and number of teeth.
- Lasts: usually 5–10 years, and some well-maintained sets last up to 15; relining every one to two years keeps it fitting.
- Best for: several or all teeth missing, or anyone who wants to avoid surgery.

Three questions usually settle it. How many teeth are missing? Are the teeth either side of the gap healthy, or do they already need crowns? And would you rather have fixed teeth, even if that means minor surgery, or avoid surgery altogether? At your consultation I examine your gums, bite and remaining teeth, and where an implant is being considered, we arrange a 3D CBCT scan at a diagnostic imaging centre in Ranchi to check the bone.
You leave with a written plan and every cost set out before anything starts. You can also get a range now with our treatment cost estimator, or read the detailed guides on implant cost, crown and bridge cost and implants vs dentures.
