Ranchi has hundreds of dental clinics, and almost every one of them calls itself the best. Search results and star ratings help, but they can't tell you whether a clinic is right for your treatment, how it sterilises its instruments, or whether the price you're quoted is the price you'll pay. As a dentist, this is the checklist I'd give a friend or family member choosing a clinic anywhere in Ranchi.
Who will actually treat you, and what are their qualifications?
Start with the dentist, not the building. Every practising dentist in India must hold a BDS degree and be registered with the State Dental Council, and a clinic should be happy to tell you that registration number. For anything beyond routine care, check whether the treating dentist has a specialist MDS degree in the relevant field:
- Implants, crowns, bridges, dentures and full-mouth rehabilitation: a prosthodontist (MDS Prosthodontics).
- Root canals and fillings: an endodontist (MDS Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics).
- Braces and aligners: an orthodontist (MDS Orthodontics).
- Gum treatment: a periodontist (MDS Periodontics).
- Children: a paediatric dentist, or a dentist experienced and patient with children.
Also ask whether the specialist on the clinic's sign is the one who will treat you, or whether they only visit occasionally.
How do I read Google reviews properly?
The number of reviews mostly tells you how long a clinic has been open. The content tells you far more. Look for:
- Specific treatments named: "my root canal was painless" says more than "nice clinic".
- Recent reviews: a clinic's team and standards change, so reviews from the last few months matter most.
- How the clinic replies, especially to criticism. A calm, specific reply is a good sign.
- Mentions of cost: "charged exactly what was quoted" is one of the most valuable things a review can say.
A newer clinic will have fewer reviews than one that has been open for ten years. That doesn't make it worse; judge the quality and recency of what people say.
Will they tell me the cost before treatment starts?
This is where many patients get caught out. A good clinic gives you a written treatment plan with the cost of every step before any work begins, explains what is included (X-rays, anaesthesia, the crown after a root canal, follow-up visits) and tells you what could change the price. Be wary of very low headline prices that grow once you're in the chair, and of pressure to start expensive treatment on the same day without time to think.

A clean waiting room says nothing about infection control. What matters is what happens to the instruments between patients. Ask, without embarrassment:
- Are instruments sterilised in an autoclave and sealed in pouches that are opened in front of you?
- Are gloves, masks, suction tips and needles single-use?
- Are the chair and surfaces cleaned between every patient?
A clinic that takes sterilisation seriously will be glad you asked, and some will show you the sterilisation area.
Do they explain the problem, or just start treatment?
You should understand what is wrong before anything is done. Good clinics show you: an intraoral camera picture of the tooth, the X-ray on screen, and the options side by side, including the cheaper or less invasive ones. If you are only ever offered one expensive option, ask what the alternatives are. Asking "what would you do if this were your own tooth?" often tells you a lot.
What equipment should a modern clinic have?
- Digital X-rays, which use less radiation and show results immediately.
- An intraoral camera so you can see what the dentist sees.
- Rotary instruments for faster, more comfortable root canals.
- Access to 3D CBCT scans before implants, either in-house or through a diagnostic centre.
Equipment isn't everything, but planning implants without a 3D scan, for example, is a warning sign.
What practical things should I check?
- Location and parking that suit repeat visits; treatments like braces, implants and root canals need several.
- Lift access if the clinic is upstairs and you're bringing elderly parents.
- Opening hours that fit your work or your child's school.
- Emergency help: who do you call if you're in pain after treatment?
- Follow-up: are review visits included, or charged separately?
A quick checklist before you book
- Is the treating dentist qualified for your treatment (MDS specialist where it matters)?
- Do recent reviews mention your treatment, painless care and honest pricing?
- Will you get the full cost in writing before treatment starts?
- Are instruments autoclaved and opened in front of you?
- Will they show you the problem and explain every option?
- Is the clinic easy to reach for repeat visits, with help available in an emergency?
How does White Oak measure up?
We built White Oak Dental Studio around this checklist. Treatment is led by Dr. Ananya, an MDS Prosthodontist and former consultant at RIMS Ranchi (Dental Reg. No. 30262 A). Instruments are autoclaved between every patient. You see your X-rays and intraoral camera images on screen, and you get the full cost in writing before anything starts. We're on the 3rd floor of SS Square, Divyayan Chowk, Morabadi, with a lift, open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 am to 6:30 pm.
Whichever clinic you choose, ask these questions. A good dentist anywhere in Ranchi will be glad you did. If you'd like a second opinion or a check-up, book a consultation or read more about how we work.
